We're immediately immersed in the game world and invested in this protagonist who we know next to nothing about – and we're dying to find out more about him. The only controls needed for this are the left control stick and the B button for jumping. No exposition, no dialogue, no tutorial, no UI to speak of. Rain Games subverts our expectations of this slow, moody game by beginning with a frantic chase sequence, and it absolutely nails "show, don't tell" storytelling through the environment and the characters' interactions with each other. We can't say enough good things about this opening scene – it should be studied in schools.

The chase moves from a residential area to a seedier neighbourhood and through a hotel (a nod to Limbo's hotel?) to a more industrialised district full of smoke and pollution, before the burly men chase the boy into an ominous castle with a drawbridge that closes behind him in classic Castlevania fashion. Through environmental storytelling, we learn a lot about the world of Teslagrad during this opening scene. Teslagrad's nostalgic old European art style and music are like a melancholy Professor Layton, if the Professor grew up in Serbia rather than England. This scene highlights the game's gorgeous parallax scrolling, not only with the background but with objects in the foreground, like walls plastered with propaganda or a stray cat running by. During this scene we get to see the town of Teslagrad for the first time, a run-down city with an imposing skyscraper towering in the distance. The game has a large number of modes, whether it be multiplayer or single-player missions, and you can also play with friends, finding rivals or fighting with computer intelligence. The boy has no powers or special abilities to begin the game, so all he can do is run across rooftops and evade the angry men giving chase. And a pleasant addition to all the innovations will be a military doctor who will always be on hand and will save your fighters from unwanted … death. Also, the distinctive and most interesting feature of this game is the ability to give orders to your fighters to move around the map at any time, which they will obediently execute without breaking away from the enemy’s shelling. To do this, hire little cubemen, and place them in positions to which they are slowly moving forward from your “flag”. You have, as in any game from the tower defense genre, to defend your base, which is either a torch or a wonderful portal of an intricate shape. Maps with a variety of difficulty levels will literally baffle and delight you at the same time, frenzied glee – that’s what you can call it. The developers have already created, and are constantly adding a huge number of cards, which consist of the most common square columns, along which the path of cubemen is laid.

In the one that greatly facilitates the work of the eyes and brain, and incredibly strongly attracts to itself with its style and sense of taste. None of the Cubemen have faces or any distinguishing features at all, except perhaps for weapons in their hands, which also do not strive to stand out, unlike the second part of the game.

You will not see more than 5 colors during the battle, shades are possible, but not colors. Since the whole elegance of the idea is in simplicity, and one might even say in minimalism, which is visible in everything.

There is nothing like it and there shouldn’t be. In the Cubemen game, there is no system for pumping and improving characters, there is no magic and assistants who would suddenly “drag” the game. And it was these developers who hit the target. The developers took and did what was obvious for this genre, what should have been done a long time ago, but no one dared or simply did not, because the idea seemed too primitive. List of CodesĬubemen is something new, which is trying very hard to resemble and join the ranks of the old and familiar, but all to no avail, because qualitatively and ideologically it is much higher than its competitors, who are no longer even competitors. And once again, the developers delight fans of Tower Defense with an inimitable masterpiece.
